NORD/LB finances electric locomotives and couchette coaches for European night train service

NORD/LB Norddeutsche Landesbank is financing environmentally friendly electric locomotives and night train carriages (sleeping, couchette and seating carriages) for RDC Asset GmbH (RDC). The transaction is another important building block in the gradual shift of European long-distance transport from road to environmentally friendly rail.

The fleet will be leased by the Hamburg-based company, a German subsidiary of the US Railroad Development Corporation, to well-known European state railways such as SBB (Switzerland), OEBB (Austria) and SJ (Sweden) and used by them as part of the European night train service. The vehicles are also used seasonally as motorail trains.

The transaction took place with the involvement of DAL Deutsche Anlagen-Leasing GmbH & Co. KG (DAL), which is the seller of the lease via a property company and structured the financing with NORD/LB.

"The financing of trains is key to the mobility and sustainable development of our society. As RDC Deutschland, we are proud to be growing in the overnight train travel segment and especially in the motorail segment in order to further strengthen the railways," explains Ute Oldenburg, Chief Financial Officer, RDC Deutschland. "With NORD/LB and DAL, we have professional partners at our side from whose financing and structuring expertise we benefit."

As the bank of the energy transition, NORD/LB has been financing sustainable projects in the energy and infrastructure sector - including rail and local public transport - for 30 years. The financing volume for infrastructure projects currently totals over EUR 5.5 billion. With this project, the bank is making a further contribution to the necessary transport transition - away from emission-intensive private transport and towards sustainable public transport solutions.
